ITTAS project Mauritania: The stakeholders of the water sector deliberating for the identification of environmental issues, Nouakchott, April 8 - 9, 2021

14/04/2021

As part of the "Improving IWRM, knowledge-based management & governance of the Niger Basin & the Iullemeden-Taoudeni/Tanezrouft aquifer system | ITTAS" project, the Sahara & Sahel Observatory in collaboration with the National Water Resources Centre (CNRE) of Mauritania organized on April 8-9, 2021, a national workshop for the restitution & validation of the national reports of the national Trans-boundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) (Dhar de Néma basin) in Mauritania.

The workshop was held semi-face-to-face, under the coordination of the project national focal point, Cheikh Zamel, Director General of CNRE, Ministry of Hydraulics & Sanitation. The department structures of the Mauritanian water sector, the project Scientific Committee as well as the national consultants took part in the workshop.

The first day was dedicated to the restitution & validation of thematic reports; the second day focused on the main TDA document for validation & adoption.

This workshop allowed the participants to have an in depth analysis of the national-level priority environmental issues of the aquifer system & to make recommendations to have them overcome.
After Benin (March 24-25, 2021), this meeting will be followed by three other countries (Algeria, Burkina Faso & Mali) in the days to come.

Once the trans-boundary issues & risks related to the use of the resource have been identified, a regional workshop for the validation of the regional TDA will be organized to find common solutions within the framework of a regional-level Strategic Action Program (SAP).

The Sahara & Sahel Observatory warmly thanks all the participants for their availability & their collaboration in these particular circumstances.
